Sichuan (四川) is a province in southwest China, home to about 84 million people and an unusually varied landscape: farmland and bamboo parks in the basin around the capital, and Tibetan-plateau mountains, lakes and temples to the west. For travellers it is one of China’s richest destinations — the UNESCO-listed Jiuzhaigou valleys, Huanglong’s terraced pools, the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei, plus the country’s best-known giant panda bases.

Chengdu (成都), the provincial capital, is where every journey here begins. It is a relaxed metropolis of over 20 million people with a slow, holiday-like rhythm: courtyard teahouses, street life, opera and a cuisine so distinctive that UNESCO named it a City of Gastronomy. Days here are built around markets, gardens, museums and long dinners — a gentle first taste of China before the mountain parks.
