Can foreign visitors use 12306?
Yes. Start with the official 12306 English website or the official Railway 12306 app, which has an English interface. This guide covers ordinary domestic journeys in mainland China; international and Hong Kong journeys need separate checks. Set up your account before an important travel day, then search, pay and confirm the ticket in your order record.
Last reviewed: 2 November 2026. The links below are official railway or government sources. Screens and available functions can change; follow the current instructions in your account.
1. Register and check your passenger details
Register through the official website or app and follow the activation instructions. The English platform supports email registration for foreign passport holders, according to MTR’s official account guide. Use an email inbox you can access while travelling, and save your login securely.
Enter your name and passport information so that they match the passport used for travel. Check the passenger record as carefully as the account profile: each person travelling needs the correct details. Follow the form’s current name-format instructions, especially for long names, spaces or punctuation; ask railway staff if your name cannot be entered correctly.
Email activation, passport identity checks and any phone-number verification are separate steps. If 12306 requests phone verification, follow its current instructions; receiving codes with a foreign number or mobile plan is not universally guaranteed. Complete the required verification and check your payment setup before departure. If you remain blocked, ask an official station ticket counter for help.
2. Complete identity verification early
China uses real-name rail ticketing. Online verification may use the personal details you enter; manual review may require passport photographs. A station ticket office is another verification route. These options are described in the government’s travel guidance. Follow the official request rather than an old app tutorial.
If verification fails, check for typing errors before resubmitting. Guangzhou’s official guidance also explains the photo-review and station-counter alternatives. Allow time for review; do not assume approval will be immediate. Upload sensitive documents only through the official process.
3. Understand when tickets open
The ordinary presale window is 15 days, including the current day, with station-specific release times. On 2 November 2026, the official presale lookup showed sales through 16 November. Tickets are not necessarily available at midnight. Check the railway’s release-time information and the live search.

4. Search the exact stations and travel date
A city can have several stations. Beijing South (北京南) and Beijing West (北京西) are different places; so are Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) and Shanghai (上海). Copy the full station name into your transport plan and check the journey from your hotel.
Choose the departure date, inspect the train number, travel time, arrival date and seat class, then check the passenger list. A departure just after midnight belongs to the new calendar day. For a connection, check whether both trains use the same station and allow time to move between them.
5. Pay, then confirm the issued ticket
Use a payment method offered at checkout. Official guidance allows foreign bank cards and mobile payments; MTR’s 12306 information specifically lists international cards such as Visa and Mastercard. This does not guarantee that every card or transaction will be accepted.
Complete any bank authentication within the payment deadline shown. If payment fails, inspect the order before trying again. A bank notification alone is not your final booking check: open the paid order and verify the date, stations, passengers, train and assigned seat. Keep the order reference accessible. For wallet preparation, see our Alipay setup guide.
6. What if the direct train is sold out?
Compare other departures or a sensible connection. If an official waitlist is available to your account, read its conditions before paying the requested advance amount. A waitlist is not a ticket and does not guarantee a seat. The official waitlist explanation describes fulfilment and refunds when requests cannot be met.
Choose a deadline that leaves time for your backup plan and check the order status yourself. Avoid relying on an unconfirmed request for a same-day flight connection.

7. Bring your original passport to the station
Carry the same original valid passport used for booking. At a compatible gate, follow staff instructions; otherwise use the staffed/manual inspection channel. The Shanghai government’s rail guide explains passport checks. Keep the document handy for boarding and arrival checks too.
For a first domestic journey, we suggest reaching the correct station 45–60 minutes before departure, with more time for busy periods, large stations or counter assistance. This is our planning buffer, not an official check-in deadline. Pass security, find your train number on the departure board and follow the gate announcements.
8. Gate closing, changes and refunds
Boarding checks stop before departure. The applicable cutoff comes from the station’s announcements, not your scheduled train time; 12306’s English FAQ instructs passengers to check locally. A downloaded itinerary sheet is not a boarding document.
If plans change, open the actual order and review the current change or refund terms before confirming. Fees and eligibility depend on timing and ticket history. We do not quote a universal fee. Ask the station or 12306 customer service when an order cannot be handled online.
Quick answers before you travel
Must I send Off Path Now my passport or card number? No. We do not need passport images, full document numbers, bank-card details or account passwords for an itinerary enquiry.
Does a train in search results mean I have a seat? No. Confirm a successfully paid ticket in your order. Can I travel with a screenshot of my passport? Bring the original booking document; do not rely on a photograph.

Official policy note
A separate reservation pilot on selected Beijing–Shanghai services accepts requests for departures 30 to 17 days ahead from 27 October 2026: see the official railway notice. A request is not a confirmed ticket. Foreign-passport and English-interface access remain unverified; check current eligibility rather than assuming access.
